Happy new year! Another new year has begun and another month’s worth of new data is live and available in Compete PRO! I hope you enjoyed your holiday celebrations as much as I did and are ready to get right back into the swing of things this year.
We’ve got a lot of exciting Compete PRO developments coming up this year and I’m looking forward to sharing more details with you in the coming weeks and months.
As in our December 2012 list, NORAD’s Santa-tracking website topped the Monthly Fast Movers list again in December 2013 as parents and families stayed up-to-date with Santa’s latest whereabouts on Christmas Eve.
On December 24, more than 1.3% of the entire Internet browsing population visited NORADSanta.org and on average in December, consumers spent nearly six minutes on the website, down from over seven minutes in December 2012.
The holiday season was also good to LeapFrog.com and HarryAndDavid.com with both sites seeing huge growth in unique visitors, although both sites saw a year-over-year (YoY) decrease.
Both sites cater to very different audiences demographically—nearly 30% of HarryAndDavid.com visitors fit the $100k+ income bracket and over 30% of visitors to LeapFrog.com fall into the $0-30k income bracket—and both sites performed very differently in terms of engagement.
While LeapFrog.com saw YoY decreases in engagement metrics almost across the board, HarryAndDavid.com made YoY increases in important metrics like page views, pages per visit, and average stay.
MegaMillions.com benefited from a massive jackpot in December ($648 million), seeing over 260% growth month-over-month (MoM) and their highest traffic month since March 2012’s record-setting jackpot of $656 million. Interestingly, even though the jackpot was only about 1% smaller than in March 2012, the site saw 30% fewer unique visitors in December 2013 than in March 2012.

As for our Yearly Fast Movers, TheVerge.com is still going strong as their unique visitor trend continues to head in a positive direction. Interestingly, they saw their largest spike in daily reach and attention of 2013 on Christmas Eve. Another positive story in growth this year comes from Upworthy.com that has seen impressive growth in unique visitors since it was started in March 2012. Referred to as the fastest growing media site in history, Upworthy.com’s blend of technology, politics, and social interest stories definitely make it a website to follow in the coming months.
